Installing Qompose on your BrightSign player

Written by Giuseppe

Requirements before you begin

  • A BrightSign player connected to the internet (Navori has tested the HD1025, HD1026, LS445, XC2055, XC4055, XD1035, XD236, XS156, XT1145, XT2145 models)

  • A Class 10 micro SD card (we recommend purchasing this through BrightSign) formatted to FAT32

  • BrightSign firmware 9.1.151 (download available here - note that depending on the model you are installing, the URL for the 9.1.151 firmware may differ)

  • Your Qompose Server URL and an available player licence number (see this section for help identifying your server URL)

In this article, we will outline how to install QL Player on your BrightSign player, from checking your firmware through to activating your player.

1. Preparing your BrightSign player

Begin by powering on your BrightSign player without the SD card inserted. The connected display will show the player’s IP address, Device Serial Number, and the currently-installed BrightSign firmware. Make a note of each of these.

Upgrading your BrightSign's firmware

In the event that your BrightSign is not already running firmware version 9.1.151, follow these steps to upgrade:

  1. Download the firmware for your BrightSign model here

  2. Add the BSFW file to the root of the SD card

  3. Insert the SD card into your BrightSign player

  4. Reboot your player

Once your device finishes rebooting and installing the firmware, power the device off, remove the SD card and restore power and confirm the upgrade was successful by following the steps in this section.

2. Preparing your files and installing Qompose

With your player ready, the next stage takes place on your computer. Please insert your BrightSign's SD card into your computer and then follow the steps below:

  1. From your Qompose CMS (for example, https://login.qompose.com/), head to Settings (top right) > Player Management > Download QL Player

  2. Locate the installer for BrightSign and click Download

  3. Extract the downloaded ZIP onto the SD card of your BrightSign player (this should contain an autorun.brs file and another ZIP called NavoriQLPlayer - do not extract this one

With your files added to your SD card and your player running the latest supported firmware, return the SD Card to your device and power it on.

3. Activating your player

Manual Activation

After following the steps in this section, you should now be seeing the activation page for Qompose, and if you have a means of attaching USB keyboard you can work your way through the page completing each of the required fields on the Activation page.

Use the Tab key and the space bar to navigate through and complete the required fields.

Once your player has activated, you will see a cloud image on the display, and your player's licence status will appear green in the Qompose UI, meaning your player is ready to receive content.

Top Tip

We recommend clicking Advanced Mode, as this allows you to enter the exact licence number from your Qompose Server to activate your player against.

Whereas Simplified Mode allows you to simply enter your Qompose username and password, and a licence is auto-selected for you.

Neither of the above activation processes is right or wrong; this is simply a matter of preference.

Auto-Activation

You also have the option to auto-activate your device, bypassing the Activation page altogether. You can do this by adding an activation.json file to the root of the SD card, with the exact server URL and licence number pre-filled. To do this:

  1. Download this example activation.json file, unzip it and open it in a text editor such as Notepad

  2. Replace the serial number and server URL with your available player licence number and your own Navori QL Server URL, then save the file with the .json extension (make certain the file does not have a .txt extension appended to its name)

This would look something like this:

{ "serialNumber": "65Fxx-E1Exx-0F1xx-9CExx-A24xx-4CBxx-29Axx", "serverURL": "https://saas-eu.qompose.com/" }

Once you have a completed activation.json file, simply add it to the root of your SD card, alongside autorun.brs and the NavoriQLPlayer ZIP, and reboot your player. The device will then auto-activate.

Once your player has activated, you will see a cloud image on the display, and your player's licence status will appear green in the Qompose UI, meaning your player is ready to receive content.

Accessing the BrightSign DWS portal

All the steps covered in this article can also be performed via the BrightSign DWS portal. To access this, you'll need to be connected to the same domain as the BrightSign device, and you'll need both the BrightSign device's IP address and its Device Serial Number.

  • Open your chosen web browser on your computer and enter the IP address, then log in with the username admin and your device serial number as the password (for example, D3E8CA000973)

  • Once logged in, head to the SD tab, then work your way through the steps earlier in this article to ensure your device is running the correct firmware and has all of the relevant Qompose installation files

  • You can reboot the player from the DWS portal at any time from the Control tab

Identifying your server URL

You'll need the URL of the Qompose instance you're accessing to configure your player. To find this:

  1. From a web browser, navigate to https://login.qompose.com/

    1. This URL is dynamic, and will change depending on your device's physical location

  2. When the login screen appears, log in to Qompose

  3. Once logged into the platform, take note of the URL you are logged into; this will be one of the following:

Please Note

When taking note of your Server URL, you do not require the "index.html#!/login" or any text that follows the base URL. For example, from https://saas-eu.qompose.com/index.html#!/login we only require https://saas-eu.qompose.com/
